Rhodes Aquarium Museum is located at the northernmost end of the town of Rhodes. It was built during the Italian occupation in 1935 by the Italian architect Armando Bernabiti, to house the Royal Institute of Biological Research of Rhodes.
Its excellent architecture contributed to its being declared a historical preserved monument in 1997, protected by the Tax Office of New Monuments. It is one of the most important marine research centres in Greece and collaborates with international research institutions for the study and protection of marine life.
The underground area of the Aquarium retains its original decoration with the porous rocks, pebble flooring and dim lighting, creating the feeling of being in an underground sea cave. It features a diverse collection of both common and rare marine species, all housed in specially designed environments filled with seawater. The Aquarium of Rhodes also holds many educational activities for the public with the aimed at raising awareness of marine life protection issues.
Rhodes Aquarium Museum is open daily, except on New Year’s Day, Greek Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.
