Acropolis of Lindos

Description

Built on a steep rock 116 meters high, the Acropolis of Lindos dominates over the traditional settlement overlooking the sea.

Its rich history, combined with the unique beauty of the natural view, makes it one of the most popular archaeological sites in Greece, as it ranks third in terms of visitors.

According to tradition, when Danaus left Egypt with his daughters, he sailed to Lindos, building the sanctuary of Lindian Athena. When the original temple was built is not known. According to archaeologists, the Doric temple of Athena dates back to the 4th century BC. The Acropolis of Lindos was used not only by the Ancient Greeks, but also later by the Romans, the Byzantines, the Knights of John and the Turks.

The Temple of Athena (300 BC), the Propylaia of the Temple, from the same era, the Hellenistic Stoa (200 BC), the Rhodia Triiris, a rock relief at the foot of the Acropolis (180 BC) and  the Hellenistic wall surrounding the Acropolis of Lindos are the most important monuments of antiquity.

The Castle, built shortly before 1317 and built on top of an earlier Byzantine building, is preserved by the Knights of St John. From the Byzantine years, the Church of Saint Ioannis of the 13th or 14th century, which is built on the ruins of an older Church of the 5th century AD, is of particular interest. In the early 20th century, Danish archaeologists excavated the Acropolis area, with the findings being transported and exhibited in the Copenhagen museum.
