Kattavia Village

Kattavia village in Rhodes is a small traditional settlement with colorful houses and paved alleys located in the southernmost part of the island, 84 kilometers away from Rhodes town.

It is one of the oldest villages on the island, as excavations carried out in close proximity to the current settlement found Mycenaean and Hellenistic tombs. Strolling through the main square, surrounded by charming taverns and cafes, along with the picturesque narrow streets of the village, offers a glimpse into the serene rhythm of daily life.

It is worth visiting the central church of the village built in 1850 and dedicated to Agia Paraskevi, with its impressive bell tower and beautiful cobbled courtyard. Also, among the most notable religious monuments is the Church of Panagia Katholiki, from the 10th century, with frescoes from the 17th century AD, which is located in the village cemetery.

If you are in the area in August, don’t miss the Kattavia Bean Festival. This event usually takes place toward the end of August and honors the importance of beans in the local community, as Kattavia is known for its high-quality beans, referred to as Lopia in the Rhodian dialect.

About 2 kilometers outside the village, you will find the Catholic Church of Agios Markos built during the Italian occupation. On the hill above the Church there are few ruins of the Paleokastro, built during the Byzantine period. Nearby, you can visit the ruins of the Old Silk Factory.

The area around the village of Kattavia, protected by the European Network Natura 2000, it is a favorite spot for bird observers as it is part of international importance for the birds of Rhodes. 

Water sports enthusiasts often choose to stay in Kattavia village because of its proximity to Prasonisi beach, a well-known windsurfing spot. The weather conditions in the area are perfect for this sport, making it a favored destination for windsurfers.
