Archangelos Village

Archangelos Village, the biggest settlement on Rhodes Island with more than 8,000 residents, sits on the central-eastern shore about 30 kilometers away from Rhodes town.

The name of the village originated from Archangel Michael, the village’s patron saint, and has a long history dating back to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. Despite becoming a major tourist destination on the island, the village has preserved its charm, and the residents uphold their customs and traditions. Archangelos village is renowned across Greece for its distinctive dialect, unique to the island.

Archangelos Village has been famous since ancient times for its tradition in ceramic art. It is even said that Emperor Justinian procured the white bricks (so-called bisala) from Archangelos for the construction of the dome of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople.

The castle, constructed in the 15th century by Grand Masters Jacques de Milly and Pierre Ramon Zacosta, is a must-see. Also, the village’s central Church of Archangelos Michael boasts a lovely bell tower from 1845, while the Church of Agios Ioannis the Forerunner displays impressive 14th-century religious paintings.
