Feraklos Castle

Description

Feraklos Castle in Rhodes, also known as Feraklou, Faraklou, and Faraklenon Castle, is located on the eastern side of the island about 37 km from the city of Rhodes. It lies between the Charaki and Agia Agathi Beach.

It was built in the Byzantine period on a hill 85 meters high, although it is assumed that there was a fortress from antiquity. It was the first fortress occupied by the Knights on 20 September 1306, upon their arrival on the Island of Rhodes, as by then it had become the starting point for pirate raids.

Initially, the Ioannite Knights did not use the castle, resulting in its desolation for many years. In later years, due to its strategic position, as it had a visual contact with the Castle of Lindos, which was very important, it was repaired by the Grand Masters Giovanni Battista degli Orsini and Pierre d’Aubusson, mainly to protect the inhabitants of the area. According to a decree of 1474, in the event of an attack, it was to be the refuge for the residents of Malona village and the neighboring villages.

Feraklos Castle was one of the most important forts. This is proven by the Decree of 1470, which ordered the abandonment of all the castles of Rhodes, except Lindos and Feraklos, whose fortifications had to be reinforced. In 1523, the Ottomans took the castle after a long siege. It was the last fortress to be occupied by the Ottomans. Since then, it has never been used.

Today, Feraklos Castle is completely deserted. Only some external parts of it are preserved. Also, on its walls you can still see the coats of arms of the Order of the Knights of St. John and the Grand Master Giovanni Battista degli Orsini.

Tips for Visiting Feraklos Castle

You can explore Feraklos Castle at any hour, but the ideal times are early in the morning to catch the sunrise or late in the afternoon when it’s cooler. Your visit to the castle must be particularly careful when climbing, as there are some difficult spots on the cobbled path. We suggest wearing suitable shoes. Additionally, we advise against the climb for the elderly and young children. The view from this castle is exceptional, just like the views from all the castles on the island.
