At the northernmost tip of the island, the cosmopolitan Rhodes Town and the island’s capital, will offer you wonderful experiences. Monumental buildings, archaeological sites, picturesque and modern districts coexist uniquely in a stately and vibrant city full of pleasant surprises. It is divided into two cities and combines in the most harmonious way the medieval with the modern element. The enchanting Medieval city with the imposing Palace of the Grand Master and the fairytale buildings and the modern or new city, which offers an equally charming experience to the visitor.
After 1522 during the period of the Ottoman Empire when the Greeks were expelled from the Medieval city where they lived they began to build their homes outside the walls, creating new districts, the so-called “Marasia”. During the period of the Italian rule, the new city spread even more widely, taking its current form.
Impressive buildings dominate its center built during the Italian occupation such as the Church of the Annunciation, the Town Hall, the Prefecture, the National Theater, the Post Office, the Hotel of the Roses (today’s casino) and the New Agora complex. The picturesque port of Mandraki with the fawns, a trademark of the town and the entire island, the fortress of Agios Nikolaos with the lighthouse and the three windmills behind it are among its most photographed symbols.
We urge you to pay a visit to the historic Aquarium museum located at the northernmost point. On the other side of town, visit the wonderful Rodini Park with running water, peacocks and paths among pines, plane trees and cypresses.
On the hill of Agios Stefanos or Monte Smith is the Acropolis of Rhodes with important archaeological findings such as the Temple of Pythian Apollo, the Temple of Zeus Poliaeus and Athena Poliada, the Conservatory and the Ancient Stadium of Rhodes.
But Rhodes is not only all that. It has many shops, restaurants, cafes and night entertainment for every taste. It is also famous for its large market and lively nightlife. With cosmopolitan beaches such as the famous Elli Beach, Rhodes Town is waiting for you to experience it to the fullest.
