Apolakkia Lake

Apolakkia Lake in Rhodes, is a peaceful nature destination located 80 km from Rhodes Town and just 4 km from the traditional village of Apolakkia.

Created in 1989 to support the agricultural needs of southern Rhodes, Apolakkia Dam gave rise to the serene Apolakkia Lake, a hidden gem far from the island’s busy beaches. Surrounded by gentle hills, pine forests, and open countryside, the lake offers a strikingly different side of Rhodes—peaceful, green, and unspoiled.

Recognized as a Natura 2000 protected wetland, Apolakkia Lake is an important stopover for migratory birds, making it a rewarding destination for nature lovers and birdwatchers. With some luck, visitors may also encounter the iconic Rhodes deer roaming freely in the area.

The lakeside is perfect for relaxed walks, especially in the late afternoon when the water reflects the warm sunlight. Spring and autumn are the most scenic seasons to visit. Nearby, a small recreation park provides a pleasant spot for a break in nature.

While in the area, don’t miss the partially submerged Chapel of the Assumption and the historic Chapel of Saint George Vardas.
