Saint Kyriaki

Description

The small Saint Kyriaki Church, or Agia Kyriaki, is a significant religious site located in Kalathos, Rhodes, about 43 km from Rhodes Town, nestled on the southeastern coast of the island.

Dating from the 15th century, this charming stone-built small church is a hidden gem that offers visitors a glimpse into the island’s rich religious heritage and architectural tradition.

Surrounded by a spacious courtyard shaded by mature trees, the church provides a peaceful setting for quiet reflection and sightseeing. Its simple stone walls and traditional tiled roof blend harmoniously with the surrounding village landscape, preserving the authentic character of rural Rhodes.

Inside, visitors can admire beautifully preserved 15th-century frescoes and a collection of rare portable icons dedicated to Agia Kyriaki. One of the church’s most distinctive features is its small masonry iconostasis, a rare architectural detail that differs from the carved wooden icon screens typically found in Greek Orthodox churches.

The Church of Saint Kyriaki hosts one of the largest traditional festivals in southeastern Rhodes on the evening of July 6, followed by the feast of Saint Kyriaki on July 7, attracting pilgrims and visitors eager to experience local customs, music, and enduring cultural traditions.
