Agia Agathi Chapel

Description

Hidden beside the beautiful Agia Agathi Beach on Rhodes’ east coast, Saint Agatha Chapel (Agia Agathi) is a unique cave church located about 38 km from Rhodes Town and just 2 km from the seaside village of Haraki.

Dating from the 14th to 15th centuries, the chapel was carved into a natural cave by hermit monks who are believed to have lived in neighboring caves. Thanks to its easy access and remarkable setting, it is one of the island’s best-known and most frequently visited cave chapels.

Stepping inside, you are immediately impressed by the carefully carved rock interior, shaped with remarkable precision. The chapel preserves 15th-century frescoes, although many have faded over time due to humidity and the natural aging of the cave.

Both the interior and surrounding area are lovingly maintained by local residents, reflecting the chapel’s enduring importance to the community.

Blending the Byzantine heritage and the natural beauty of Agathi Beach, the cave chapel of Saint Agatha offers a memorable stop for visitors exploring the cultural and coastal treasures of Rhodes.
