Surrounded by trees, the cathedral was designed by Italian architect Armando Bernabiti in the style of a three-aisled basilica with a flat roof. Construction began in 1936 and was completed in 1939 during the Italian administration of the island under Governor Mario Lago. Its most recognisable features are the soaring bell tower and the impressive statue of Saint Francis of Assisi, which stands beside the main entrance.
Inside, visitors are welcomed by an elegant and peaceful interior. The striking murals behind the sanctuary illustrate scenes from the life of Saint Francis, while the magnificent pipe organ above the entrance—recognised as the largest in Greece—creates an unforgettable atmosphere during services and concerts.
Mass is celebrated in Greek every Sunday and on major feast days, while multilingual service booklets in 12 languages allow international visitors to follow the liturgy in their native language.
The Cathedral of Saint Francis of Assisi is also renowned for its rich programme of sacred music. Each year, the International Festival of Organ and Music, usually held in early October, brings together distinguished musicians from around the world, making it one of Rhodes’ leading cultural events.
