Dormition of the Virgin Mary

The Panagia Church in Ialyssos, Rhodes, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Koimisi tis Theotokou), is renowned for its remarkable art and architecture. It lies about 8 km from Rhodes Town, in the heart of the village.

Serving as the village’s principal church, this historic place of worship was built in 1751. Visitors are welcomed by a well-kept courtyard, where trees, flowers and benches create a peaceful setting.

The church is distinguished by its traditional Rhodian pebble mosaic, known as “chochlakia”. Dating from 1756, this decorative stonework covers both the interior and exterior of the church, giving it a distinctive local character.

The church has been altered and expanded several times over the centuries. Its impressive bell tower, an elegant architectural feature, was incorporated into the complex in 1939.

As you step inside, an impressive icon of Archangel Michael, dating from 1890, immediately catches the eye near the entrance by the bell tower. Beside it stands a silver-plated icon of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, believed to be around 300 years old. A rare icon depicting the Dormition of the Virgin Mary also holds a prominent place in the church.

The magnificent carved wooden iconostasis is one of the church’s major highlights. Created in 1782 by the renowned Kos Island craftsman Mastro-Drakos, it took 20 years to complete. It is considered one of the finest examples of Ottoman Baroque ecclesiastical architecture in Greece and showcases the exceptional skill of an artisan whose other notable works include the iconostasis at the Church of Archangel Michael Panormitis on Symi Island and the Old Metropolitan Church in Rhodes Town.

A significant restoration project took place between 2009 and 2016, during which stunning new frescoes were added to the interior. The church also houses historically and artistically important icons from the nearby 15th-century Chapel of Saint Nicholas.

Feast Day and Panigyri of Panagia in Ialyssos

The Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in Ialyssos village celebrates its feast day on 15 August. On the afternoon of 14 August, following the solemn Vespers service, the Epitaph of Panagia is carried in procession, accompanied by hymns dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The celebrations continue with a traditional festival in the village square, featuring dancing and local food.
