Description
The Chapel of Saint John the Forerunner (Agios Ioannis Prodromos), known locally as Agios Ioannis Vathenos, stands near Platania, about 26 km from Rhodes Town and 2.5 km from the village, in a peaceful forest setting.
Located in the Vathia area, this small chapel is surrounded by a beautiful woodland of tall cypress trees and offers lovely views towards Platania village. Built in 1896 by the Poulis family as an offering to the saint, it has remained under the care of successive generations of the family ever since.
The chapel’s whitewashed exterior, tiled roof and simple bell tower reflect the traditional architecture of rural Rhodes. Its courtyard features the characteristic whitewashed decorative patterns often found in the outdoor spaces of Greek island chapels.
The interior is modest and peaceful, with no frescoes and only a few portable icons adorning the walls. A simple stone iconostasis displays older icons of the Virgin Mary, Christ and Saint John the Baptist.
To reach Agios Ioannis Vathenos Chapel, turn right from the main Platania–Archipoli road, following the signposted route to the chapel. It is a worthwhile stop for visitors exploring the rural landscapes, religious heritage and traditional villages of Rhodes.
Feast Day and Panigyri of Agios Ioannis Prodromos in Platania
The chapel celebrates its feast day on 29 August. Each year on 28 August, a traditional panigyri takes place in the courtyard, featuring local food and traditional dancing. In 2026, the village festival will take place on 29 August.
