Archangel Gabriel Patitiriotis
Description
The Monastery of Archangel Gabriel Patitiriotis is a must-see historic religious landmark nestled among the picturesque alleys of Archangelos village, about 30 km from Rhodes Town.
Built in the 15th-century, the monastery stands in a charming little square in the area known as Patitiri, which once served as the main square of the old settlement of Archangelos. The original village was built around it, and the monastery served as both the principal place of worship and cemetery church of the village, with the cemetery located directly behind it.
The name Patitiriotis comes from the Greek word patitiri, meaning wine press. As the village expanded, a traditional grape press was established in this area for crushing grapes and producing wine, giving both the neighbourhood and the monastery their name.
Before stepping inside, take a moment to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. A large tree stands at the centre of the square, surrounded by colourful flowerpots, while a traditional grocery shop (Pantopoleio), more than 100 years old, adds to the area’s authentic village character.
The monastery reflects traditional Rhodes architecture, with whitewashed walls, a tiled roof, blue decorative details around the entrance and an old brown wooden door. Its simple interior holds several interesting religious treasures. On the right-hand wall, a large and rare icon of Archangel Gabriel stands out, decorated with embroidered fabric and dozens of votive offerings left by worshippers. An old wooden iconostasis, historic portable icons and distinctive wall paintings inside the sanctuary complete the interior.
Deeply respected by the local community, Archangel Gabriel Patitiriotis is considered miraculous. According to local tradition, many miracles are attributed to him, particularly involving women who have difficulty having children.
The Saint Gabriel Patitiriotis Monastery in Archangelos is open to visitors throughout the day, making it a lovely stop for those exploring the village’s churches, history and cultural traditions.
