Archangel Michael

Description

The Church of Archangel Michael, also known as Taxiarchis Church, in Archangelos, about 30 km from Rhodes Town, is a cherished religious landmark renowned for its stunning architecture, historic interior, and unique local traditions.

Built in 1845 on the site of an earlier church dedicated to the same archangel, the church follows the architectural style of a three-aisled basilica with a narthex. One of its most striking features is its exceptionally tall, white bell tower, an impressive example of architecture that can be seen from a distance, even before reaching the village.

The church courtyard has a distinctive charm of its own. A centuries-old cypress tree stands alongside flower-filled pots while the traditional pebble mosaic floor, decorated with beautiful patterns, adds to the atmosphere.

Inside, two large and imposing religious images immediately draw the eye. The magnificent icon of Archangel Michael stands directly opposite the main entrance, while an impressive depiction of the Last Supper dominates the right-hand side.

Another important feature is the finely carved wooden iconostasis, dating from 1856. Created in the Ottoman Baroque style, it is decorated with icons from the same period. To its right, visitors can also see another exceptionally large and rare icon of Archangel Michael.

The church’s decoration is completed by traditional pebble mosaics covering the entire floor, creating a harmonious setting that reflects the artistic heritage of the island.

Beyond its historical and architectural significance, the Church of Archangel Michael in Archangelos is particularly special for its religious customs and celebrations, some of which are unique to Rhodes.

If you visit Rhodes during Greek Orthodox Easter, try to attend the procession of the Epitaph through the picturesque streets of Archangelos. Unlike the usual practice of holding this procession on Good Friday, in this village it takes place in the early hours of Holy Saturday. Accompanied by a band and illuminated by candlelight, the procession creates a memorable atmosphere.

Another unique custom takes place in summer. On 14 August, the eve of the Feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, village women decorate the Virgin Mary’s Epitaphios with flowers. It is then carried through the streets in a candlelit procession accompanied by hymns and church bells, following a tradition reminiscent of Easter.

Feast Day of Archangel Michael Church in Archangelos

The church celebrates the feast of Archangel Michael on 8 November (Synaxis of the Archangels), with a solemn Divine Liturgy followed by a procession of the saint’s icon through the village. Accompanied by a band and attended by large numbers of worshippers, the celebration brings the local community of Archangelos village together in honour of its patron saint.
