Ancient Ialyssos

Ancient Ialyssos, Rhodes. This great city-state is located on Filerimos hill, next to the Medieval monastery of Panagia. 

Inhabited since prehistoric times, took its name from the ancient hero Ialyssos, it was the oldest city of the island, while it was an important commercial centre and a member of the Doric Hexapolis.

The Temple of Athens Polias, which was located on the Acropolis, dates to the 3rd-2nd century BC. It was occupying the site of an older temple of the classical era according to the findings. Today, only a few remains survive.   

Diagoras, the renowned Olympic champion, originated from Ancient Ialyssos.
