Archangelos village in Rhodes, the largest village of the island with a population of over 8,000 inhabitants, is located on the central-eastern coast of the island, at a distance of about 30 kilometers from the town of Rhodes.
It was named after the Archangel Michael, who is also the patron saint of the village. One of the oldest settlements, as the habitation of the surrounding area dates back to the Neolithic and Bronze Age according to the findings. Although it has developed into one of the most important tourist resorts of the island, the village maintains its picturesque element and its inhabitants faithfully maintain their customs and traditions. Archangelos village is known throughout Greece for its special language dialect, which stands out throughout the island.
What to see and do in Archangelos Village
If you find yourself in Archangelos, it is worth visiting the castle that dominates the settlement, built in the 15th century by the Grand Masters Jacques de Milly and Pierre Ramon Zacosta.
The church of Archangel Michael in the center of the village with the beautiful bell tower, dating from 1845, and the church of Agios Ioannis the Forerunner, with remarkable 14th century hagiographies. Archangelos village has been famous since ancient times for its tradition in ceramic art. It is even said that the emperor Justinian procured from Archangelos the white bricks (so-called bisala) for the construction of the dome of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople.
