Attavyros Mountain

Attavyros Mountain, the tallest peak in Rhodes and the Dodecanese, rises to an impressive height of 1216 meters. It is located in the western part of the island, approximately 60 km from Rhodes Town.

At the foot of this stunning mountain, you can find the picturesque villages of Embonas and Agios Isidoros, each offering a unique glimpse into the serene beauty of the landscape.

The slopes of Attavyros are home to the most significant vineyards on the island, cultivating local grape varieties that produce exceptional-quality wine. This small natural wonder is protected by the NATURA 2000 network, boasting diverse and rare flora and fauna. On the northwestern slopes lies the breathtaking cypress forest of Katarti, which has been rightfully declared a natural monument.

The Temple of Zeus

Atop the mountain, you will discover an archaeological site showcasing the ruins of the Attavyrios Zeus temple. This sanctuary, built during the Hellenistic era by Althemenis, son of the King of Crete Katreas, held great significance and garnered worldwide fame in Ancient Greece. Numerous inscriptions found at the site confirm the worship of Zeus in Attavyros.

In 1927, during the Italian occupation, the Italian Archaeological Service conducted excavations, unearthing remarkable architectural remains from the 5th and 4th centuries BC. Adjacent to the temple of Zeus, you will also encounter the ruins of a monastery dating back to the early Christian era, dedicated to Agios Ioannis.

How to Get There

Experienced mountaineers can embark on a challenging climb from the paths in Agios Isidoros and Embonas, while others can opt for a scenic drive to the mountain’s summit. Although the road may be narrow and winding, the surface is well-maintained, with only a small section being a dirt road. The panoramic view from any vantage point will leave you in awe. From the mountain’s peak, you can marvel at the entire island, as well as the neighboring island of Chalki and various smaller islets.
