Kahal Shalom Synagogue

The Kahal Shalom Synagogue is the oldest Jewish synagogue in Greece and the only one still in use on the Island of Rhodes. It was built in 1577 and is located in Medieval Town.

The full name of the synagogue is “Kahal Kadosh Shalom,” which means Holy Congregation of Peace. It serves the Jewish community for prayer services, especially during special occasions and holidays.

Inside the Kahal Shalom, the design reflects traditional Sephardic architecture, with the prayer reading table, or “tevah,” positioned in the center facing southeast toward Jerusalem. The floor features beautiful black and white mosaic patterns typical of the Medieval Town of Rhodes. In the 1930s, a balcony was added for women’s seating, who previously observed services from adjoining rooms.

The Kahal Shalom Synagogue also has a historical courtyard with a plaque marking the location of a water fountain built at the same time as the synagogue. Additionally, there was once a religious school nearby, but it was destroyed during World War II. The sanctuary is adorned with various religious wall paintings, adding to its cultural significance.
