Laerma Village in Rhodes is a semi-mountainous community situated in the interior of the island, about 60 kilometers southwest of the city of Rhodes.
The village of Laerma, despite its proximity to tourist resorts, offers a serene escape for those seeking peace in nature while preserving its long-standing customs and traditions. Discover its charm by wandering its quaint streets with whitewashed houses, visiting the central church dedicated to Agios Georgios, which was built in 1877, and enjoying the delicious local cuisine at its traditional tavernas.
As one of the oldest settlements on the island, the municipality of Ladarmia, originally named Laderma and later Laerma, was part of the Ancient Lindos state and was among the most significant locations in Rhodes. This is supported by the impressive archaeological discoveries located very near the village. The royal tombs carved into the rocks in the “Frangoklisia” area highlight the region’s historical significance. This specific area can only be accessed on foot, and caution is advised due to the challenging terrain.
When visiting the area, be sure to stop by the Holy Monastery of Tharri, also known as the Holy Monastery of Archangel Michael of Tharrinos. Located near Laerma village, this monastery is a significant pilgrimage site on the island, showcasing stunning frescoes from the 12th to the 18th centuries. Every year, on November 8 and May 21, it holds two of the biggest traditional festivals on the island to honor Archangel Michael and Saints Constantine and Helen, respectively.
In addition to the grand celebrations at the Holy Monastery of Tharri, Laerma village is home to various traditional festivals throughout the year. Notable events include the Festival of Saint George on April 23 in the central square, and the Festival of the Lady, which takes place on the Monday after Easter at a chapel in the nearby forest. The village’s highlight is the Olive Festival, celebrated every March in the central square with traditional dances, food, and drinks.
And finally, don’t forget to visit the Gadoura Dam, which is only a few kilometers away from the village. It is a real earthly paradise that will enchant you.
