Monolithos Castle

Description

Monolithos Castle, located in Rhodes, Dodecanese, is perched on a stunning rock that rises 236 meters above the ground.

Situated on the southwestern part of the island, it lies approximately 70 kilometers from Rhodes Town and only 3 kilometers from the village of Monolithos. Constructed in 1476, it was erected on the remnants of an earlier Byzantine fortress, overseen by Grand Master Pierre d’Aubusson.

With a panoramic view of the sea and the island of Halki, the Castle of Monolithos, due to its strategic position, was the most important fortress in southern Rhodes and one of the four most powerful forts on the island during the Middle Ages. This is proven by a decree from 1474, which states that the inhabitants of the surrounding areas should take refuge in Monolithos Castle in case of an attack.

The ravages of time could not fail to leave their mark on this unique monument. Only two chapels from the 15th century are preserved in its interior, Agios Georgios and Agios Panteleimon, of which Agios Panteleimon has been restored.

How to Get There

Access the castle via the main road, where you can park your car. You’ll encounter a path with cobblestone steps that may be somewhat steep, so take care while ascending. The breathtaking views awaiting you at the top will make the effort worthwhile.

Best Time to Visit

The castle is open for visits at any hour of the day. However, during the summer, the ideal times are early morning or late afternoon. We suggest visiting in the late afternoon to witness the stunning sunset in this historic location. A trip to this remarkable site promises to be an unforgettable experience.
