Every August, Greece transforms into an open-air celebration under the light of the full moon — and 2026 will be no exception. The Greek Ministry of Culture is once again organizing the August Full Moon events this year, managed by the General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage. On the night of the Full Moon, Friday, August 28, 2026, guests will have the chance to visit selected archaeological sites and historic monuments throughout the country at no cost.

In Rhodes Island, the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes in Medieval Town will welcome visitors from 20:00 until midnight, offering free admission. Guests can access the museum from the entrance of the Museum Square. Discover centuries of history as the moonlight highlights the Gothic arches and stone courtyards, crafting a magical atmosphere that takes you back in time.
Also, the uniquely designed Recep Pasha Mosque, located in the beautiful Dorieos Square in Rhodes Old Town, will open its doors to the public for the first time in many years from 19:00 to 22:30 with free entrance. Built in 1588 by Recep Pasha, the mosque was once considered the second most important mosque in Rhodes after the Suleiman Mosque. Don’t miss the chance to experience an important part of Rhodes’ multicultural history under the light of the full moon.
Where to Watch the Full Moon Rise in Rhodes
The Sturgeon Moon will rise over Rhodes at around 8:08 PM, offering a spectacular sight as it emerges above the eastern horizon. For the best views, look for an open horizon facing east to southeast, where the moon can be seen rising above the Aegean.
For panoramic views across Rhodes Town and the sea, head to Monte Smith Hill, while Mandraki Harbor, with its bronze deer statues, offers an open horizon and a beautiful seafront backdrop. Rhodes Old Town is ideal for atmospheric views of the medieval walls and historic buildings illuminated by moonlight.
Alternatively, the eastern coastline offers numerous seaside locations where you can watch or photograph the moon rising above the sea. The village of Lindos provides an especially striking setting, with the Acropolis, whitewashed houses and the Aegean creating a memorable backdrop.
