Miniature Horses of Rhodes
Event Starts In
Description
Discover the Miniature Horses of Rhodes in the Napes area, near the village of Archangelos, where the Faethon Association protects one of Greece’s rarest and most distinctive horse breeds.
Standing at around 110 cm tall, these Rhodian small horses are among the smallest breeds in the world, second only to the Falabella horses of Argentina, and are considered the smallest in Greece. They are easily recognised by their thick manes, expressive eyes, small ears and long, full tails.
Their coats are typically dark brown or cinnamon, and their calm, gentle nature makes them especially appealing to families with children and animal lovers. Visitors can meet the horses up close, enjoy a coffee or snack at the on-site café, and browse the small souvenir shop. Entrance is free. Purchases at the site help support the association’s work and contribute to the care and preservation of this rare breed for future generations.
The Miniature Horses of Rhodes have lived in the area since ancient times and became closely connected with daily life in Archangelos. They were once used for farming and local transportation, but as modern technology changed rural life, their traditional role disappeared and their numbers fell dramatically.
By the late 20th century, the breed was at risk of extinction. In 2001, the Archangelos Miniature Horse Protection Association “Faethon” was established to protect the remaining animals and safeguard this unique part of Rhodes’ cultural heritage. Today, the horses live in modern facilities under the association’s care, with a population of 13 animals.
Special Event: On Sunday, 11 October 2026, the Faethon Association is hosting an Open Day Fundraiser from 10:00 AM, with an art and craft exhibition supporting the care of the Miniature Horses. The day will include a BBQ with vegetarian options, homemade cakes and sweets, art and craft stalls, and a second-hand clothes rail. It’s a great opportunity to meet the horses while supporting the association’s work.
By visiting this beautiful site, you can discover a lesser-known side of Rhodes and learn about a breed deeply connected to the island’s history and rural traditions.
How to Get There
