Dormition of the Virgin Mary

The Panagia Church in Embonas, Rhodes, nestled in the heart of the village, 54 km from Rhodes Town, is an important religious landmark of the island, dating back to 1853.

Dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Koimisi tis Theotokou), the front courtyard immediately catches the eye with its traditional pebble mosaic, flower beds, and elegant bell tower, which was incorporated into the church in 1886.

The main entrance retains its original heavy wooden door, dating from the church’s construction. Two columns with carved capitals and a relief pediment frame the doorway, giving it a distinctive appearance reminiscent of an ancient Greek temple. 

Behind the church, a small garden filled with flowers occupies what was once the village cemetery. Together with the surrounding grounds, it adds to the peaceful character of this historic site.

Inside the Panagia Church, the impressive wooden iconostasis, dating from 1870, is the main focal point. Elaborately carved and gilded, it features intricate decorative details. The icons decorating the iconostasis and church walls date from 1884, including a particularly striking large portable icon depicting the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.

The interior floor stands out with its traditional “chochlaki” pebblework, which is arranged in decorative patterns, showcasing a unique aspect of Rhodes’ local architectural craftsmanship.

Feast Day and Panigyri of Panagia in Embonas

The church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in Embonas celebrates its feast day on 15 August. On the evening of 14 August, Embonas Village hosts a traditional festival featuring a major Divine Liturgy, a procession with the icon of the Virgin Mary, followed by traditional dancing, local food and festivities in the village square.
