Dormition of the Virgin Mary

The historic Panagia Church in Lindos, Rhodes, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Koimisi tis Theotokou), is one of the island’s most significant religious monuments. It is located about 50 km from Rhodes Town.

Just a short walk from the village’s main square, on the way to the Lindos Acropolis, it was built in the 13th century on the remains of an earlier church, probably dating from the 10th century. Its unique architecture features a domed, free-cross design, while the imposing stone-built bell tower, dating from 1489, still bears the coats of arms of Grand Master Pierre d’Aubusson and Lindos Castellan Jacques d’Aymer.

Inside, visitors can admire exceptionally well-preserved frescoes painted in 1779 by the iconographer Gregorios Symaios, according to an inscription. Among the most striking scenes are Saint Christopher depicted with a dog’s head, the punishment of the Agarenes, episodes from the Last Judgment, and the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child. The church’s carved and gilded iconostasis, dated 1671–1702, is another remarkable feature.

Access to the small museum space in the northern wing is available for a small entrance fee, where a collection of valuable ecclesiastical treasures from the 17th to 19th centuries is displayed. Rare icons, sacred chalices, vestments and handwritten parchments offer visitors a fascinating glimpse into Lindos’ religious and cultural heritage.

Feast Day and Panigyri of Panagia Church in Lindos

The Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary celebrates on 15 August. In the evening of the same day, Lindos comes alive with a vibrant traditional festival (Panigyri) in the village square, featuring delicious local cuisine, lively music, and joyful traditional dancing.
