Description

At the entrance to Kattavia Village in South Rhodes, Panagia Katholiki Church is one of the area’s oldest churches. It is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Koimisi tis Theotokou).

Set within the village cemetery, about 84 km from Rhodes Town, this stone-built Byzantine church dates back to the 11th century. Its cross-in-square design and dome reflect the architectural traditions of the period, making it a notable stop for visitors interested in the religious heritage of Rhodes.

Outside, the Church of Panagia Katholiki features an unusual bell tower at the entrance to the courtyard, unlike many of the bell towers found elsewhere on the island. Much of the traditional pebble mosaic flooring has also survived in the small courtyard. Beside the church entrance is a dedicated ossuary, adding another layer to the site’s historic character.

The interior is particularly atmospheric, with exposed stone walls and a traditional “chochlaki” pebble floor in the narthex. The main church preserves rare frescoes that were uncovered around two decades ago during archaeological conservation work. Three layers of wall paintings were revealed, with the latest dating to the 17th century.

Among the most notable scenes are the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, the Pantocrator in the dome, and the frescoes in the sanctuary, which remain especially well preserved. A major conservation study has been undertaken to protect these important works, supported financially in part by Kattavia’s diaspora community in the United States.

The carved wooden iconostasis is decorated with rare icons, including a distinctive silver-plated icon of the Virgin Mary, which remains in relatively good condition.

Feast Day and Panigyri of Panagia Katholiki in Kattavia

The church celebrates its feast on 15 August. On the evening before, a traditional procession takes place, accompanied by hymns to the Virgin Mary, followed by a vibrant village festival in Kattavia’s main square.
