Tattooing is not a fashion trend — it is an ancient art form that can be traced back to the earliest days of humankind. It is believed that the very first “tattoo” happened by accident when charcoal came into contact with a wound on someone’s skin and remained there permanently. Ötzi, the famous mummy discovered in the Alps, had charcoal markings on his spine, behind his knees, and around his ankles. He is believed to have lived around 6000 BC.
