Description

The Chapel of Saint John in Dimilia, dedicated to Saint John the Forerunner (Agios Ioannis Prodromos), lies about 35 km from Rhodes Town and just 1.5 km from Dimilia, surrounded by lush countryside.

Coming from Soroni, taking the road towards Agios Soulas, you can find it just before the village. Its peaceful setting makes the chapel a pleasant stop before exploring the charming village of Dimilia and the surrounding area.

One of the village’s oldest chapels, it has undergone recent renovations to both its interior and surrounding grounds, while retaining its simple traditional character. The small whitewashed building features subtle blue details, a tiled roof and a distinctive small metal bell tower incorporated into the roof.

Inside, the atmosphere is modest and serene. There are no frescoes; instead, portable icons decorate the walls, complemented by a simple wooden iconostasis without elaborate carvings. A particularly notable feature is the icon depicting the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, known in Greece as Saint John the Forerunner, displayed on a simple gilded shrine.

Feast Day and Panigyri of Agios Ioannis Prodromos in Dimilia

The chapel celebrates its feast day on 29 August. On the evening of 28 August, the courtyard hosts a traditional village festival (panigyri), bringing the community together with Greek folk dancing, traditional food and a unique local atmosphere.

For visitors interested in Rhodes’ religious heritage, village traditions and rural landscapes, the chapel offers a quiet glimpse into everyday island culture beyond the main tourist routes.
