Description

Perched on a small hill and surrounded by a serene pine forest, the historic Chapel of Saint John in Kalithies, Rhodes, offers a tranquil escape. It is located 16 km from Rhodes Town and only 3 km from the charming Kalithies Village.

Dedicated to Saint John the Forerunner (Agios Ioannis Prodromos) is considered one of the oldest and most significant chapels in the area, with strong importance for the local community. Easily reached by car or motorbike, the chapel is approached along a scenic route through the woodland, offering a peaceful escape from the busier parts of Rhodes.

Its traditional island character is immediately apparent. The exterior is painted in the familiar white of Greek island chapels, accented with touches of blue, including the stone-built icon stand on the facade. A tiled roof and distinctive dome give the building an unusual silhouette compared with many smaller chapels in Rhodes.

The spacious courtyard features whitewashed stone benches and a stone-built shrine, while a small section of traditional Rhodian pebble mosaic adorns the front of the entrance. The remaining floor is decorated with characteristic whitewashed patterns, often seen in traditional island courtyards.

Inside, the chapel is simple and atmospheric. A well-preserved fresco of Saint John the Baptist survives beside the small carved wooden iconostasis, which displays icons of Christ and the Virgin Mary. Several portable icons and pebble flooring complete the modest interior.

Down the steps from the chapel, visitors find a larger, tree-shaded outdoor area with stone tables. Used occasionally for local events, it also provides a pleasant setting for a picnic surrounded by nature.

Feast Day and Panigyri of Agios Ioannis Prodromos in Kalithies.

The feast day of Saint John the Forerunner is celebrated annually on 29 August. On the evening of 28 August, the eve of the feast, a traditional panigyri takes place in the chapel’s courtyard, with traditional dancing, food, and many visitors.
