Agios Ioannis Meroglitis

The Chapel of Saint John the Forerunner (Agios Ioannis Prodromos) in Pefkos, Rhodes, located 56 km from Rhodes Town, is a 13th-century religious landmark known for its traditional architecture and historic frescoes.

Known among locals as Agios Ioannis Meroglitis, it stands beside the main road shortly before the center of Pefkos, on the approach from Lindos. Its convenient location makes it a worthwhile stop when exploring this popular coastal resort and the surrounding area. 

Built from local stone and finished in traditional island white, the chapel has an unusual domed roof, a distinctive feature rarely found on small rural churches in Rhodes. Pine trees surround the site, while the spacious courtyard, enclosed by a stone wall, provides a cool and tranquil place to rest in the shade.

Inside, valuable frescoes survive in relatively good condition. One of the best-preserved depicts the Virgin Mary (Panagia) and is set within a recessed arch. Other notable wall paintings include a large representation of Saint John the Baptist beside the wooden iconostasis and Christ Pantocrator in the dome.

The simple wooden iconostasis is adorned with rare religious icons, including the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ.

Feast Day and Panigyri of Agios Ioannis Prodromos in Pefkos

The annual feast of Saint John the Forerunner takes place on 29 August. A traditional panigyri is usually held in the courtyard on the eve of the celebration. In 2026, it will take place on 27 August, offering visitors a chance to experience a genuine local tradition and the warm communal atmosphere of a Rhodes village festival.
