Panagia Tsambika

The Monastery of Panagia Tsambika Kato or Chamili, is a cherished pilgrimage destination situated on the eastern coast of Rhodes, about 28 km from Rhodes Town and just 2 km from the traditional village of Archangelos.

Dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, it is a single-nave, cross-vaulted basilica and a characteristic example of traditional Dodecanese architecture. According to an inscription, it was renovated in 1760 by the abbot Chatzigerasimos.

Its striking white bell tower is one of the first features to catch the eye, while the spacious courtyard, shaded by trees and furnished with benches, provides a peaceful place to pause.

Inside, the atmosphere is intimate and deeply devotional. The church is decorated with rare icons and an exceptional 18th-century wood-carved iconostasis in the Ottoman Baroque style.

Among the monastery’s most significant treasures is the silver-covered miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, displayed in an ornate wooden shrine. According to tradition, the icon was discovered at the site where the chapel of Panagia Tsambika Kyra Psili (Upper) is built.

Nearby, another elaborate gilded wooden shrine houses a rare silver-clad icon depicting the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.

The monastery courtyard is also home to an Ecclesiastical Museum, with archaeological, historical, and ethnographic exhibits dating from the 14th to the 19th centuries. Particularly noteworthy is its collection of rare printed books, including works produced in Venice, and manuscripts such as the Axion Estin written in Arabic script. A small shop on the grounds sells religious icons, books, and other ecclesiastical items.

Panagia Tsambika holds a special place in local tradition as a protector of fertility and childbirth. Couples visit throughout the year to seek the Virgin Mary’s blessing, and some baptize their children here, giving them the unique Rhodian names Tsambika or Tsambikos, depending on gender. The monastery is also a popular setting for weddings.

A visit can easily be combined with the Panagia Tsambika Psili Chapel, perched on a nearby hill, and Tsambika Beach, one of Rhodes’ best-known beaches.

Feast Day and Panigyri of Panagia Tsambika in Archangelos

The Panagia Tsambika Monastery celebrates its feast day on 8 September. Every evening from 5 to 7 September, one of Rhodes’ most significant traditional festivals takes place, where folk dancing, local cuisine, and thousands of visitors come together to honor the Nativity of the Theotokos.
