Description

The historic Church of Panagia in Psinthos, Rhodes, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, stands proudly in the village square as its main place of worship. Built in 1871, it lies 28 km from Rhodes Town.

As you arrive, the stone entrance and the tall, striking bell tower will catch your attention. Its peaceful courtyard is paved with traditional Rhodian pebble work, known as chochlakia or votsaloto, and surrounded by tall cypress trees, flowers and small trees.

Inside, a beautifully carved wooden shrine holds the icon of the Nativity of the Theotokos. The floor features traditional pebble designs, while colorful frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Christ and figures of saints cover the walls. The Christ Pantocrator on the ceiling is particularly impressive.

The church’s decoration is completed by an ornate wooden iconostasis in the Ottoman Baroque style, featuring several rare icons.
