Description
  • Fanes

The picturesque Church of Saint Nikitas (Agios Nikitas) also known as Nicetas the Goth stands on a small hill at the entrance to Fanes village, 26 km from Rhodes Town.

Built in 1864, this charming stone small church has a tiled roof and stands within the village’s old cemetery. Approaching from Rhodes, it is easy to spot on the way towards the village square. A simple metal bell tower stands beside the façade, while a tiled image of Saint Nikitas on horseback can be seen on the wall next to the entrance.

The interior is decorated with beautiful modern frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Christ and figures of saints. The most striking is the impressive depiction of the Last Judgement above the entrance.

On the right as you enter, a simple carved wooden shrine houses a portable icon of Saint Nikitas on horseback. The church’s attractive wooden iconostasis is decorated with rare icons, while another image of the saint stands nearby, adorned with flowers and offerings from worshippers.

Feast Day and Panygiri of Agios Nikitas in Fanes

Agios Nikitas is celebrated on 15 September and holds a special place in the traditions of Fanes. A traditional festival (Panygiri) with local food and dancing takes place below the church on the evening of 14 and 15 September.

On the evening of 14 September, following Vespers, the saint’s icon is carried in procession through the village, accompanied by a marching band, a military detachment and local authorities. Saint Nikitas is also the patron saint of Reserve Officers of the Hellenic Army.
