Description
The picturesque Monastery of the Holy Cross (Timios Stavros) lies just before Damatria village, 14 km from Rhodes Town and about 1 km from the settlement, surrounded by cypress trees.
Located on the left side of the main road towards Damatria, as you come from the western side of the island, the monastery is reached by a picturesque small road lined with tall cypress trees. Its unique stone bell tower provides a striking first glimpse of this peaceful religious site.
The spacious, well-kept courtyard is shaded by cypress and plane trees, making it a pleasant place to pause and enjoy the quiet surroundings before exploring Damatria village.
Inside, the monastery is richly decorated with frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Christ and figures of saints. Among its notable features are the carved wooden iconostasis, adorned with rare icons, and the gilded carved bishop’s throne.
A gilded shrine set into the wall near the iconostasis houses an icon of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Particularly distinctive are the silver-plated and gilded wooden seats arranged on both sides of the church.
