Description

Nestled in a lush green landscape near Embonas village, the Chapel of Archangel Michael is one of the oldest churches in the area, inviting visitors to explore the traditions and the peaceful countryside of Rhodes.

The chapel lies approximately 45 km from Rhodes Town and just 13 km from the village of Embonas, in the deserted settlement of Nanoi. It once served as the main church and cemetery church of what was once a thriving village, making it an important part of the area’s local heritage.

Archangel Michael Chapel has a simple yet charming appearance. Its whitewashed exterior, traditional tiled roof and lack of a bell tower reflect the modest character of the building. White stone benches beside the entrance provide a peaceful spot to relax, enjoy the surrounding greenery and take in the tranquillity of the landscape.

Inside, the chapel retains its understated character, with a simple wooden iconostasis decorated with Orthodox religious icons. One of its most remarkable features is a rare wall painting of Archangel Michael, located on the left-hand wall as you enter. Adorned with a white cloth and dozens of votive offerings left by the faithful, it is a particularly moving sight.

Nearby, a small wooden shrine houses another, smaller icon of the Archangel, while several portable religious icons complete the interior decoration.

The chapel remains an important place of worship for the nearby village of Embonas. Many local families choose it for their children’s baptisms, maintaining a strong connection with this historic religious site.

Feast and Panigyri of Archangel Michael in Nanoi

Every year on 8 November, the chapel celebrates the Feast of Archangel Michael with a traditional festival (Panigyri) featuring local food, music and dancing. The festivities begin after the morning church service around 10:30 AM and continue throughout the day, often lasting until the evening, with the local community gathering to honour its traditions.

This longstanding celebration dates back to the founding of the settlement. When Nanos village was still inhabited, it was one of the best-known religious festivals in the area, attracting visitors from neighbouring and more distant villages. Today, it remains one of Embonas’s most cherished annual celebrations.

How to Get to Archangel Michael Chapel

Coming from Salakos, a few kilometres before reaching Embonas, just after the Monastery of Saint Irene, near the junction for Profitis Ilias, turn right onto a dirt road. Look for the sign marking the route; please note that it is written in Greek (Προς Ιερά Μονή Αρχαγγέλου Μιχαήλ). From there, the chapel is approximately 3 km away.

A visit to Archangel Michael Chapel in Nanoi offers a rewarding opportunity to discover a quieter side of Rhodes, combining local history, religious tradition and the natural beauty of the island’s countryside.
