Description

The Church of the Holy Cross (Timios Stavros) stands at the highest point of Kalithies village, 13 km from Rhodes Town and just 3 km away from vibrant Faliraki, offering religious history and stunning architecture.

Built between 1870 and 1875, the church is dedicated both to the Transfiguration of the Saviour and the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Its dedication to the latter is linked to the church’s inauguration, which took place on the feast day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

As the main church of Kalythies, it can be reached by walking through the village’s picturesque streets. At the top, a tall, tower-like bell tower immediately stands out. The peaceful courtyard features traditional pebble-mosaic patterns, flowers, elegant benches and a charming stone fountain. A striking centuries-old cypress tree adds to the atmosphere, while the elevated position provides lovely views over the village.

The church’s exterior is notable for its carved ancient Greek-inspired designs above the main entrance, accompanied by two columns. The side entrance features an impressive carved wooden door. Behind the church is the former village school, a beautiful historic building that now houses the village town hall.

Inside, a marble floor and remarkable frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Christ and figures of saints create an impressive setting. The decoration is completed by a richly gilded, carved wooden iconostasis in Ottoman Baroque style, featuring rare icons, together with an equally ornate gilded carved bishop’s throne.
