Lardos Village
Description
Lardos Village in Rhodes is a coastal community found in the southeastern part of the island. It lies 52 km from Rhodes Town and can be conveniently reached from Lindos.
Famous for its beautiful beaches such as Lardos Beach and Lothiarika, has quickly become a favorite among tourists. With its luxury accommodations and a variety of traditional restaurants, cafes, and bars, it offers a perfect blend of relaxation and local culture.
The village’s trademark is the central square with the fountain. The fountain of special architecture has been located at this point since the time of the Italian occupation and still gushes water from a nearby spring. The beautiful alleys of the village will lead you to the central Church dedicated to the Archangel Michael. Miraculously, after restoration work, it was discovered that the Church stands on the foundations of an early Christian Church. If you are in the area on November 8, do not miss the traditional festival.
In addition to the central Church, it is worth visiting the chapels of Agios Ioannis and Panagia Katholiki located just outside the village, which feature unique frescoes. Also, be sure to visit the Folklore Museum of Lardos. The Holy Monastery of Panagia Ypseni is also of outstanding importance for Lardos. Situated a few kilometers from the village, it is one of the most sacred places on the island with a rich history and rare relics.
Lardos, Rhodes in the Ancient Greek and Medieval Eras
Lardos village seems to have been inhabited since ancient times, as important archaeological finds have been discovered in the area. The ancient open-air mine of “Marble of Lardios” near the cave of Agios Georgios, where there was a temple of the goddess Artemis in ancient times, as well as the limestone mine and the black and red stone mine, are some of these finds.
Also, in a short distance from the village of Lardos, the foundations of the wall and towers of the Byzantine castle of Lardos, dating back to the 12th century AD, are preserved. In 1309, the village was granted to Admiral Vignolo de Vignoli for his contribution to the conquest of the island by the Knights Hospitaller.
