Description
Panagia Eleimonitria Chapel in Archangelos village, also known as Alemonitria, is a cherished religious site located about 27 km from Rhodes Town and 3 km from the village center.
Surrounded by tall cypress trees and lush greenery, this small white chapel offers a peaceful retreat away from the bustle tourists resorts.
Outside, the paved courtyard, stone boundary wall and rustic stone benches create a tranquil space for visitors to pause and enjoy the natural surroundings. A stone-built shrine stands beside the chapel, while an ornate carved wooden door adds a unique traditional detail.
The interior is modest and atmospheric, with no frescoes but several portable icons. A simple wooden iconostasis displays icons of the Virgin Mary, Christ and various saints, while two large icons of the Virgin Mary stand out on the right-hand wall. The floor is decorated with “Chochlakia,” the traditional Rhodian pebble mosaic technique.
Feast Day and Panigyri of Panagia Eleimonitria in Archangelos
Panagia Eleimonitria celebrates on 23 August, marking the Nine Days after the Dormition of Theotokos. A traditional village festival is held on the evening of 22 August, when the people of Archangelos and nearby villages gather to honor the Apodosis of the Virgin Mary, known locally as Eniamera.
