Panagia Kalopetra

The Holy Monastery of Panagia Kalopetra, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, stands 23 km from Rhodes Town, between Theologos and Psinthos, above the Valley of the Butterflies.

Set among pine trees on a hillside, this historic monastery offers sweeping panoramic views and a peaceful setting. It is also one of the area’s most important places of pilgrimage, combining religious heritage with the natural beauty of Rhodes.

According to tradition and an inscription in the church, the monastery was founded in 1784 by Alexandros Ypsilantis. He is said to have made a vow after surviving a serious ordeal at sea near Theologos aboard his ship.

The monastery was damaged by earthquakes in 1856 and 1863 and was rebuilt in 1865, taking its present form. For many years, it operated as a coenobitic community and flourished until the early 20th century, making an important economic and spiritual contribution to the surrounding area.

Inside, highlights include the finely carved wooden iconostasis dating from 1862, decorated with rare icons from the same year, and a separate shrine containing an 1812 icon of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. The monastery also preserves rare books from 1745 and 1754, as well as a sacred chalice dating to 1873.

Another notable religious treasure, the so-called “Ypsilantis Icon,” depicts the ordeal of a fleet at sea. For security reasons, it is kept at the Church of Saint Spyridon in nearby Theologos village.

Panagia Kalopetra Monastery is a tranquil place to visit. Its beautifully landscaped courtyard, shaded by trees and brightened by flowers, provides a relaxing spot to enjoy the countryside and panoramic views.

Feast Day and Panigyri of Panagia Kalopetra in Butterflies Valley

The monastery celebrates its feast day on 15 August. On the evening of 14 August, a traditional festival takes place in the courtyard, attracting numerous worshippers from across Rhodes.
