Dominating the village square, this impressive church has long been a place of worship for the people of Rhodes and attracts pilgrims and visitors from around the world. Construction began in 1882 and was completed in 1892, using stone from the ruins of the early Christian Church of Saint Barbara at Kerami and the ancient quarries of Kymissala, linking the building to the island’s rich historical heritage.
Even before stepping inside, the church commands attention with its elegant twin bell towers and distinctive central dome. The equally impressive interior features a beautifully carved wooden iconostasis, remarkable frescoes painted in 1950, and a treasured icon of Saint Panteleimon, created in 1779. The dome is adorned with a striking depiction of Christ Pantocrator surrounded by the Twelve Apostles, while a sacred relic of Saint Panteleimon is also preserved within the church.
Directly opposite stands the original 10th–11th-century Church of Saint Panteleimon, now serving as a small museum displaying valuable ecclesiastical treasures, many dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.
The Church of Saint Panteleimon celebrates its feast day on July 27, while the evening of July 26 hosts one of Rhodes’ largest traditional village festivals, bringing together locals and visitors for a memorable celebration of faith, music, and local culture.
