Prophet Elias Chapel

The Prophet Elias Chapel (Profitis Ilias) in Afandou, Rhodes, is a serene retreat perched on a hill, offering stunning vistas of Afandou Village and its coastline. It lies 18 km from Rhodes Town on the eastern side of the island.

Although its exact date of construction remains unknown, locals suggest that the chapel of Profitis Ilias has stood here for many generations. The peaceful setting is surrounded by pine and cypress trees, while a large cross stands prominently at the top of the hill. At the entrance to the courtyard, a stone-built shrine featuring a mosaic icon of Prophet Elias and a traditional stone fountain welcomes visitors.

Inside, the chapel features the classic pebble floor found in many Greek Orthodox churches. Its most distinctive feature is the simple white iconostasis that contrasts with the carved wooden screens typically seen in Orthodox chapels. The understated interior is decorated with icons, including that of the Prophet Elijah, creating a tranquil atmosphere for prayer and reflection.

It can be reached by following an uphill road from the entrance to the village when arriving from Afandou Beach. Along the way, you will pass a series of small roadside shrines illustrating scenes from the life of Christ, creating a reflective walk to the summit.

Feast Day and Panigyri of Profitis Ilias in Afandou

The chapel celebrates the feast of Prophet Elias on July 20. Each year, on July 19, a traditional festival is held, offering the opportunity to experience one of Afandou’s most cherished religious and cultural celebrations.
