Saint Marina Church

The historic Saint Marina Church (Agia Marina), located in the picturesque Apolakkia Village, 77 km south of Rhodes Town, is one of southern Rhodes’ most important religious landmarks and pilgrimage sites.

Known locally as the “Katholiko”, the church is dedicated to the patron saint of Apolakkia and stands proudly at the heart of the village. Revered by both residents and visitors from across the region, it remains a centre of faith and local tradition.

The church courtyard is framed by tall cypress trees and an elegant bell tower decorated with colourful stained-glass windows, creating a peaceful and welcoming setting.

Inside, visitors can admire a rare icon of Saint Marina, remarkable frescoes portraying Orthodox saints and scenes from the life of Christ, and an impressive carved wooden iconostasis in Ottoman Baroque style. Richly detailed and adorned with rare icons, it is one of the church’s most distinctive features.

Unlike most traditional churches on Rhodes, the floor is not covered with the island’s characteristic pebble mosaic, while two marble columns stand before the iconostasis.

Feast Day and Panigyri of Agia Marina in Apolakkia

Saint Marina’s feast day is celebrated annually on July 17, with one of the largest traditional festivals in South Rhodes taking place on the evening of July 16. Held in the village square, the celebration features local music, dancing and authentic Rhodian cuisine, attracting visitors from across the island.
