The Chapel of Kyra Panagia, nestled between the village of Laerma and the Holy Monastery of Tharri, about 62 km from Rhodes Town, is one of those quiet places in Rhodes that feel untouched by time.
Dedicated to the Nativity of the Theotokos, this small and unassuming countryside chapel, yet deeply meaningful for the locals, offers a moment of calm away from the island’s busy routes. Surrounded by pine trees and painted in traditional white, it blends effortlessly into the natural scenery. Its simple bell tower and stone pezouli (bench) invite visitors to pause, rest, and enjoy the silence of the landscape.
Inside, the atmosphere is humble and peaceful. A simply built iconostasis holds old portable icons, while on the left and right walls, you can see the centuries-old icons of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, standing out for their age and spiritual significance. Above the entrance, a single wall painting depicts the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, adding a subtle artistic touch.
Panigyria (Religious Feasts) in the Chapel of Kyra Panagia
Every year, on Easter Monday, a traditional village feast takes place here, while on September 8th, the feast day of the chapel, a Divine Liturgy is followed by a procession of the icon of the Virgin Mary throughout the village, passing from house to house.
How to Get There
Getting there by car is simple. Once you drive through Laerma towards the Monastery of Tharri, look for a sign on the left indicating the old military camp. After a short stretch of dirt road, you will find the Chapel of Kyra Panagia on your left.
