Description
The Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary stands in the heart of Afandou village, on the eastern coast of Rhodes, about 18 km from Rhodes Town. Dating back to 1839, this historic church overlooks the village’s central square and serves as the parish church of Afandou.
Originally built as a single-nave church dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Koimisi tis Theotokou), it was expanded in 1966 with two additional aisles, creating the three-aisled basilica seen today. The left aisle is dedicated to the Three Hierarchs, while the right aisle honours Saint Luke the Evangelist, the patron saint of Afandou.
Although the church retains its original dedication to the Virgin Mary, Saint Luke holds particular importance in Afandou’s religious traditions, distinguishing the central church from the historic Church of Panagia Katholiki near the beach, which is also dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.
One of the first features to catch the eye is the six-storey bell tower at the entrance, built in 1924. Its imposing presence and architectural details make it a unique landmark in the village. Beyond the entrance, a charming courtyard showcases the traditional pebble mosaics for which Rhodes is famous. These decorative patterns, crafted from small pebbles, reflect the island’s folk-art heritage.
Inside, the church is adorned with beautiful frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Jesus Christ and figures of saints. Near the entrance, a separate carved wooden shrine houses an icon Panagia dating from 1859. Further inside, another carved wooden shrine on the right side displays an icon of Saint Luke the Evangelist.
Other highlights include the elaborate, gilded wooden iconostasis, decorated with rare icons, and the large chandeliers suspended throughout the interior. Look down, too, to admire the traditional Rhodian pebble mosaics, arranged in different patterns across the church floor.
The church also preserves an important religious relic from the nearby Panagia Katholiki Church: the sacred icon of the Virgin Mary. It is transferred to Panagia Katholiki three times each year, on 15 August, 23 August and Easter Monday. These occasions are marked by religious processions and solemn Divine Liturgies, drawing worshippers and visitors alike.
Feast Day and Panygiri of Agios Loukas in Afandou
The church’s principal celebration takes place on 18 October, the feast day of Saint Luke (Agios Loukas). On the evening of 17 October, usually at around 7:30 PM, a festive Vespers service is held, followed by a procession carrying the icon of Saint Luke in the presence of the Metropolitan of Rhodes. The celebrations continue in the village square with a traditional festival featuring music, dancing and food, attracting people from all over the island.
The church also celebrates the Dormition of the Virgin Mary on 15 August and the feast of the Three Hierarchs on 30 January.
