Built in 1819 on the ruins of an earlier mosque is widely known for its unique architecture, which sets it apart from other mosques on the island. The devastating earthquake of 1856 caused significant damage, which was fully repaired by 1875. However, the Mehmet Aga Mosque suffered again during World War II, and further restorations were carried out over subsequent decades to preserve this historic landmark.
What makes the mosque truly unique is its wooden minaret, unlike the traditional minarets found in other Rhodes mosques. Its fountain, located on the right side of the street beneath the mosque, is also distinctive: a marble wall with embossed designs and three taps separated by stone columns.
Today, the Mehmet Aga Mosque no longer hosts religious services, but it is a protected historic monument under the care of the Greek Ministry of Culture, preserving its place in Rhodes’ Ottoman heritage.
