Sindrivan Mosque

Description

The Sindrivan Mosque is a smaller but historically significant Ottoman monument on the island, located in the heart of Rhodes Medieval Town, just a short walk from Hippocrates Square on a side alley of Sokratous Street.

Built on the site of a former Medieval Christian Church dedicated to Saint Sebastian, the mosque was reportedly founded by Sinan Bey, with the original prayer hall on the ground floor. After being destroyed, possibly by fire, it was rebuilt, with the current structure dating to 1888.

One of the mosque’s most unique features is its first-floor location above commercial shops, a rare example of Ottoman neighborhood mosque architecture. The mosque is octagonal with a dome, following traditional Ottoman religious design. Unlike many mosques, the Sindrivan Mosque has no minaret, likely due to its small size and urban setting, although it is possible that a simple minaret existed previously but has not survived. Its impressive fountain can be found on Sokratous Street.

Today, the Sindrivan Mosque no longer functions as a place of worship, and the interior is not open to visitors. Despite this, it remains an important historic and cultural monument, reflecting the long-standing coexistence of different cultures and religions in Rhodes over the centuries.
