Prophet Amos Chapel

Description

Nestled among fragrant pine trees and the graceful peacocks that wander freely, Prophet Amos Chapel (Profitis Amos) in vibrant Faliraki is one of Rhodes’ best-kept secrets, located about 15 km from Rhodes Town.

Built in 1838 on the remnants of an earlier Byzantine church dating back to the 5th–6th century AD, the chapel preserves an important piece of Rhodes’ religious heritage. Visitors can still admire surviving frescoes from different periods, including a striking depiction of Saint George, as well as a remarkably well-preserved mosaic floor.

According to local legend, Prophet Elijah, whose chapel stands atop the hillside, sent a giant boulder rolling downhill during the chapel’s construction. Prophet Amos stopped the rock, saving the church from destruction. The legendary boulder can still be seen behind the chapel today.

Thanks to its beautiful setting and stunning views, the Chapel of Prophet Amos is a popular venue for weddings and baptisms among locals.
