According to local tradition, the monastery was founded after shepherds discovered an icon of Prophet Elias on this very site. It was destroyed during the Ottoman occupation of Rhodes and later rebuilt in the 19th century, when the Sultan granted permission for local monks to restore this important place of worship.
A charming entrance and a short flight of steps lead into a tranquil courtyard surrounded by monastery buildings. The complex features the classic whitewashed architecture of Greek monasteries, complemented by terracotta roof tiles and a small bell tower integrated into the chapel.
Inside, the atmosphere is simple and serene. A beautifully patterned pebble mosaic floor, portable icons and elegant woodcarvings create a sense of quiet devotion. Highlights include the intricately carved shrine housing the icon of Prophet Elias and the impressive iconostasis adorned with images of Christ, the Virgin Mary and the Saints.
The monastery celebrates the Feast of Prophet Elias on July 20 , with traditional festivities beginning on the evening of July 19 . This annual celebration offers visitors a memorable opportunity to experience the religious heritage, local traditions and authentic cultural life of Rhodes in a welcoming setting.
