Description

The Transfiguration of the Savior Chapel (Metamorfosi tou Sotiros) in Kiotari, Rhodes, is a peaceful Byzantine chapel overlooking the charming Kiotari Beach. It lies 58 km from Rhodes Town.

Built entirely of stone, the chapel stands slightly above the main coastal road and offers a distinctive glimpse into the island’s traditional religious architecture. Its simple bell tower is integrated into the side wall, while the spacious courtyard, shaded by trees and lined with stone benches, provides a quiet place to pause.

A particularly attractive feature is the traditional Rhodian pebble mosaic, known locally as chochlaki. Covering part of the courtyard and entrance area, it showcases a craft tradition closely associated with Rhodes.

Inside, the stone walls create a calm, intimate atmosphere. The carved wooden iconostasis features rare religious icons, including the Transfiguration of the Saviour and the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child. Traditional pebble flooring and four stone columns add further character.

The chapel celebrates its feast day on August 6. On August 5 and 6, its courtyard hosts a major traditional festival, offering visitors an opportunity to experience local culture, music and community traditions in an authentic setting.
